European textile manufacturers are pressing EU policymakers to protect industrial funding within the upcoming 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework. As energy costs remain double pre-2022 baselines and cheap third-country imports flood domestic retail channels, industry trade group Euratex is lobbying for targeted allocation under the proposed European Competitiveness Fund. European apparel and textile production generates €166 billion across 200,000 businesses, but operational margins face persistent compression. Industry leadership emphasizes that direct capital subsidies are crucial to accelerate decarbonization, circular recycling infrastructure, and advanced automation without surrendering global price parity.

Aligning sustainability mandates with economic survival

European textile operators encounter mounting operational bottlenecks while adapting to stringent EU environmental mandates. Dirk Vantyghem, Director General, Euratex, affirmed, political ambitions toward sustainability must be backed by accessible financial mechanisms for mid-tier producers and small-scale mills. Industry trade analysts note that preserving dedicated research initiatives like the Textiles of the Future partnership under Horizon Europe will allow local manufacturers to scale high-margin technical textiles, protective apparel, and recycled yarns, offsetting declines in traditional fast-fashion garment production.

Advocacy for European textile ecosystems

Established in 1996 and based in Brussels, Euratex serves as the central voice for Europe’s textile and clothing manufacturing sectors. Representing nearly 200,000 enterprises employing 1.2 million workers, the organization drives policy advocacy, sustainable manufacturing initiatives, and regulatory compliance across global markets. Euratex targets long-term industrial resilience by pushing for fair trade enforcement, digital supply chain integration, and regional innovation hubs.
